Background and History of the NOTO Arts District

Located within an easy walk from the Market is the NOTO Arts District, this makes for a fun-filled experience of strolling, shopping, dining.

The arts district was developed as a part of Topeka’s Heartland Visioning project starting in 2009.  What was once a charming historic business area of Topeka suffered major devastation with the flood of the 1950’s, the area never fully recovered. With the development of the NOTO Arts District, empty buildings attracted local and regional visual and performing artists, antique dealers, a NOTO Community Arts Center,  new restaurants and more!

This led to the planning of the NOTO Saturday Market to enhance the popular NOTO Arts District on North Kansas Avenue.  The Saturday Market is envisioned to be a market unique in the Topeka setting.

With a focus on the arts, antiques, fine crafts, flea market items and local produce, the goal is to have an area of heritage food booths which are reflective of the multi-cultural neighboring community, providing a rich cultural experience.
